Me and Music

(this is a long talk, sorry for that)

Hi there,
My name is Cathelijne Ubbens, but I like to call my self ‘Charlie’ ( Because it sounds better in English). We were given the task to write a blog post about ‘you and music’. So, without any further ado, I’ll tell a bit about me and music.

From the age of 8 to 11 I played the piano, unfortunately I forgot every single thing I learned. I did many attempts to try it again, but it did not work out. I would really like to learn how to play the piano again. I also played the viola when I was six, this was just for 3 lesson though. Last year I discovered ‘the guitar’. After 2 years of watching people do covers of my favourite songs on YouTube, I found out that I wanted to be able to do that too. I borrowed my dad’s old guitar and learned myself a few chords from the internet. Within a month I learned my self how to play the most easy version of Drops Of Jupiter, by train. I was really proud of myself back then. 3 months later, I took lessons. Last December, on my birthday, I received my very first own guitar. And I love him (it's a Spanish 'Esteve' guitar).

I don’t get the feeling I can call my self a real guitar player though, in my eyes, I still play rubbish, but I really want to improve my quitar playing – skills.

Music has always been my greatest passion. I make homework with music on, I shower with music on, I fall asleep listening to my favourite songs and I wake up and immediately turn on my radio. I mostly listen to ‘Sky radio’ because I like how they differ songs from the past and  now-a-days.

Through writing songs, I try to express my feelings. I’ve always been a writer-person. I have a diary, used to write books, and now I write songs.

Something I really enjoy doing, is searching YouTube for covers of songs I like. I look up a few people and see if they make the original sound better with their own version. If they do, I listen to their version for about a month and then get bored of the same voice.

I don’t really have a music taste.. I like all different things: I grew up listening to the Beatles and the Stones, and still listen to the Beatles every day. On an average day, I listen to a lot of covers and music from people that are ‘YouTube famous’ (like ‘Karmin’ and Megan and Liz). Next too Maroon 5, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Little Mix and Demi Lovato, I also listen to Bob Dylan and since this summer I often listen to Bob Marley (I went on a surf camp, where nothing but Bob Marley and Ben Howard were played). I have to admit (and I’m not ashamed of this) I still listen to the High School Musical songs, Justin Bieber, One Direction and The Wanted (often referred to as ‘stupid boy bands’). I also love love love to see musicals (Beauty and the Beast + Tarzan are my favourite).

My first concert I ever went to, was this year in the Melkweg. I went to see Ed Sheeran, it was such a good night!

A few more things: In the future I’d really like to play the guitar very well and be a good singer-song writer. That’s what I really enjoy doing.
A job in the music industry also seems very interesting to me.

Sorry for the long post.
